What Does SEO Mean?

SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. According to Wiki "Search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ('organic' or 'algorithmic') search result." It's a way to structure a website so that you reach your maximum potential target audience.

Understanding Search Engines and Their Significance

There are two means of accessing a website. The first is achieved by directly inputting the URL (Web Address) onto your browser's address bar. The second is by using a search engine to query websites.
When searching the web, the search engine goes across the internet and gathers webpages containing similar text to those you have inputted. These web pages are sorted then listed as search results. These search results are ranked through text relevancy and importance. The higher a website is ranked, the more visible the website is to the public, and the more traffic a website recieves.

The significance of a search engine is that it provides a means for people to search for products, services, or information on your website and to learn about the existance of your company/business/blog/etc. The higher your website is ranked, the more visible you are to the public.

How Do I Rank Higher?

Search engine rank results are determind through various means. For a long time meta tags (html codes) were used to list keywords and descriptions of a web page for search engines. The problem with a pure meta tag search engine is that any John Doe could start a website and rank high on search results simply because he uses good keywords when his service is neither popular, well liked, or exactly relevant. Google has had a huge impact on making web search less frusterating by encorporating search algorithms that minimize the importance of meta tags and focus on web page content and popularity. Google Rankings has great information for choosing keywords, optimizing your website, and ranking higher on Google search.

Why don't you do Search Engine Optimizations?

The web is a large place, and I'm mainly a designer. Search Engine Optimizations deals with keywords and page content. I design websites and implement that design. SEO is also a field all on it's own, there are companies who pay a full time staff of SEO or hire an SEO and it's simply not something I can compete against. I do offer basic meta tags, but more or less this it out of my field.
